I prefer to use Spybot Search & Destroy. It looks for spy warem key-loggers, all that stuff you don't want on your comp. You can pick it up for free at download.com, search on a search engine and pick a different download site. Plus, it has a nice immunixe feature that stops previously known problems from coming back.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 takes you to the AVG Anti-virus page, and it updates automatically. I stopped using Norton because it kept crashing while downloading, so this is quite a remedy for the computer.
And as for Firewalls...
ZoneAlarm is one of the best firewalls, as it asks and remembers programme details when you next use it.
Another thing is to have the full updates for Windows XP (That you use?) on and then you can remove the threat of Trojans from your computer (via a handy Popup Blocker).
Hope this helps!

If it is lag, chances are it could be malware. AVG is good, as suggested. But for spyware/malware, use:
Spybot Search & Destroy
SpywareBlaster
Lavasoft Adaware
With Spybot, be sure to install Tea Timer and the Resident Shield. SpywareBlaster is a preventative program, blocking bad sites. Spybot (besides Tea Timer and Resident Shield) and Adaware or active programs, that run scans on your computer looking for bad things.

AVAST any day over any other A-V if you ask me.
Also, never use a windows PC without a firewall. www.sygate.com brings you to the home of a FW with a wonderful free version.

I was about to type my response when I noticed that. Trend Micro is my personal favorite.

I use McAfee at home because my work's license allows it.
But for free, I've used AVG, Spybot, and AdAware SE.

I like AVG best for the free anti-virus software. Havn't had any problems after using it.

AVG is pretty good, I've never gotten a virus since I built this PC though. I usually shut it completely down, no running in the background or anything, I just run a system scan about every month, and that's about it. For the occasional spyware infection, Spybot S&D, though using Firefox seems to keep a lot of it away from me. For a firewall (which also detects trojans and such if they attempt to establish a remote connection) I use Sygate Personal. Doesn't take up much memory, and runs pretty unobstructively in the system tray, it can be a bit of a hassle to get it set up with all your programs though...
